Total Lunar Eclipse Imaging Session - April 4, 2015
The sky this evening was very cloudy and we were concerned a bit that we wont be able to view it. Despite the situation, ALPers consisting of James Kevin Ty and his son Kendrick COle KC Ty; Andrew Ian Chan, and Shubhashish Banerjee went to Andrew's residence to observe the eclipse at his roof deck. James brought along along his Canon EOS 500D DSLR with Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 IS L lens set at 400mm f/5.6 on Vixen Polarie Star Tracker; Andrew with his Canon EOS 500D DSLR with EFS 28-200mm f/5.6 IS lens on Vixen Polarie Star Tracker ; Shubhashish with his Canon EOS 7D DSLR with EF 70-300mm f/4.5 lens on Vixen Polarie Star Tracker.
The sky was very cloudy at the start of the eclipse which is around 6:16pm. They were able able to get shots through clouds at around 7:15pm. Just before totality starts, the sky opened up a bit for them to observe and image the eclipse at its finest time. This total lunar eclipse is very unique because it has the shortest totality duration of less than 5 minutes! It is caused by the Moon passing through the northernmost limb of the Earth shadow thus during totality, there was a very high dynamic range of reddish shadings on the Moon which has a very 3D effect! They continue to observe the eclipse till about 8:40pm before the entire sky totally got covered by clouds thus ending their imaging session. They waited till about 9:30pm before calling it a night.
